Fiber optic probes provide a flexible solution for adequate interface between the spectroscopic device and the sample to be interrogated. They can be put into small cavities and tubular structures and they allow remote sensing with long distances between sample and instrument.
Several families of probes are existing : reflectance probes, transmission probes, transmission dip probes, fluorescence probes, Raman probes, etc.
Considering the number of possible configurations required most of the probes are custom designed for specific applications. Consequently a very specific know-how is required from the manufacturer to obtain best results and security. • Transmission of the required wavelengths : the choice of fiber will adapt UV (200-400nm), UV and Visible (200-800nm), Visible (400-800nm), IR and Visible (400-2000nm), IR (1500-5000nm) and Far IR (4000-14000nm).
• Interface between spectroscopic device and probe : fiber size and precision of the array is important to obtain best match with the optical analyser detector. High resolution systems require very thin line arrays with no space between adjacent fibers.
• Distant end of the probe : the mechanical interface has to allow optimum positioning of the fiber probe and collect a maximum of the light. Special optics, deflectors or filters may be required. Fiber configurations include round bundle, line, hexagonal, etc.
• Fiber sheathing : a large number of materials and solutions are available according to the environment. Biocompatibility of the materials may be a determinant factor.
